EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
