A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his initial trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.

The Russian, a former number one, has experienced a torrid period, managing just a single victory at the Grand Slams and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him exiting of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-time coach Cervara.

Now collaborating with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's maiden championship following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt from that period of the previous year.

The win also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 Medvedev.

"This championship is in tribute of my child her name, because the maiden victory I won when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had failed in his previous six finals, comprising in Halle previously this season.

His counter-punching play style and regular reactions on the playing surface had caused commentators to wonder if his ability to play at the elite level was finished.

But the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and compete aggressively, backed up by an improved serve.

The champion recovered from a break down in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, winning 4 of the final five exchanges to go ahead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial tour championship, took control to force a third set.

He defended four early-game chances in a tight third set before Medvedev won the break to that score to secure the win.

Suitably, Medvedev earned the title with a point at the net, with his opponent unable to handle a volley after a lengthy match.
